Functional Testing in Halifax

Evaluating How Systems Interact

Functional testing at Bright & Well is used by Naturopathic Doctors to understand how different systems in the body are operating and interacting over time. Rather than focusing on a single result, it looks at patterns across areas such as hormones, nutrient status, digestion, inflammation, and stress physiology- adding context when changes are hard to explain.

This kind of testing isn’t about diagnosing a problem or chasing perfect numbers. It’s about understanding relationships- how hormones interact with stress, how nutrients affect resilience, and how we can support the different systems that influence one another over time.

Functional testing doesn’t replace hormone assessment, and hormone assessment doesn’t replace functional testing. Each answers a different question. When used appropriately, they work together to support clearer understanding and more confident next steps.

How Functional Testing Works

1

Schedule

Schedule a Naturopathic consultation to determine whether functional testing is appropriate.

2

Test

Testing is selected intentionally based on individual context. Some tests are completed in clinic, while others may be completed at home.

3

Get Results

Results are reviewed through a clinical lens, with attention to how systems may be interacting.

4

Action

Findings are discussed with your practitioner to determine appropriate next steps as part of a coordinated, focused care plan.

What We Test

hormone health

Women & Men’s Hormonal Health

Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers — influencing metabolism, energy, mood, libido, cycle health, and how the body responds to stress. When patterns shift, the effects are real and felt across multiple systems at once. Hormone and cortisol testing looks at how these patterns are interacting over time — not just whether a single marker is in range.

gut health

GUT HEALTH

The gut microbiome plays a direct role in immune function, inflammation, hormone metabolism, and how the body processes nutrients. Symptoms like bloating, irregular digestion, food sensitivities, chronic inflammation, and unexplained fatigue often have a gut component — even when standard testing hasn’t shown anything. Gut mapping looks at the microbiome comprehensively to understand what’s actually happening.

adrenal health

ADRENAL HEALTH

The adrenal glands produce cortisol, adrenaline, and DHEA — hormones that regulate the body’s stress response, energy production, and metabolic function. When these patterns shift over time, the effects show up as fatigue, mood changes, sleep disruption, and reduced resilience under pressure. Adrenal testing looks at how these patterns are functioning across the day.

Vitamin D testing

micronutrient testing

Standard bloodwork checks whether you have enough of something. Micronutrient testing checks whether your cells are actually using it. Deficiencies that don’t show on a standard panel — in B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, antioxidants, and others — can affect energy, mood, immune function, and hormone metabolism in ways that are real but hard to trace.

genetic testing

METHYLATION, DETOX & GENETIC TESTING

Genetic variation affects how the body processes hormones, environmental toxins, and key nutrients. Understanding these patterns can inform why certain symptoms persist despite otherwise normal results — and help target support more precisely.

mental health

MENTAL HEALTH

The Organic Acids Test looks at metabolic pathway function — including neurotransmitter metabolism, mitochondrial function, and nutrient status — to understand how biochemical patterns may be contributing to mood, anxiety, focus, and energy.

cardiometabolic testing

CARDIOMETABOLIC TESTING

Cardiovascular and metabolic health are shaped by hormones, inflammation, and how the body manages glucose and lipids over time. This testing looks at risk markers beyond standard cholesterol panels to provide a more complete picture of long-term cardiovascular and metabolic function.

biological age testing

VITAMIN D TESTING

Vitamin D plays a role in immune function, bone health, mood regulation, and hormonal balance — and deficiency is far more common than standard panels typically reveal. Testing provides a clear picture of current status and informs whether supplementation or dosage adjustment is appropriate.
